Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this program horizontal (apparent) shear data from a number of quality control efforts were compiled and augmented by additional tests. The data were used to show the effects of test parameters, cure conditions, and material age on the apparent shear. Failure modes were recorded. Findings include: (1) Based on the horizontal shear test, CE 9000 (Ferro Corp.) should not be postcured above 370 F, and the desirability and effects of a postcure between 350F and 370F should be explored before committing to this postcure condition. (2) Autoclave cure of CE 9000 will increase its resin dominated shear properties 50% or more, compared to vacuum-bag, oven-cured parts. An appreciable drop in apparent shear using the short beam method occurs as S/t6 is increased. Data should be normalized to a consistent S/t for comparison. (3) The predominant damage pattern for woven glass coupons is related to S/t and the degree of cure. (4) Certain woven glass composites require an S/t well below 5 to achieve shear failure. (5) Short beam specimens of the type investigated should be fabricated with peel plies or porous release cloth on both sides.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypertension is a major world-wide health problem. With high blood pressure there is a greater risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease and renal failure. Far too few people realize what the risks are and what can be done to prevent these risks even in the countries where pro grams in hypertension research are active and the full significance of hyper tension is best understood. Some studies of the known hypertensive popu lation indicate that one-half or less are receiving adequate treatment, and, of those on therapy, only half have their high blood pressure satisfactorily controlled. These realizations emphasize the need to inform all segments of society throughout the world on the importance of detection and control of high blood pressure. The great incidence of hypertension makes it of para mount importance that all practicing physicians have available the latest information on diagnosis and treatment of hypertensive cardiovascular dis ease. This treatise on hypertension arrives at a time when there is an increasing recognition the world over of the importance of detecting and treating high blood pressure. The book has been edited by Dr. A. Amery and his asso ciates in the University of Leuven. Professor Amery is one of the leaders in the field of hypertension and serves on the Council of the International Society of Hypertension.

Download PDF Novel Approaches to the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease by E. Meyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alzheimer's disease afflicts up to 1 in 5 people over the age of 65 years and causes untold suffering of the patient and their family. The cause of this disease is unknown; indeed, evidence increasingly suggests that there may be multiple Alzheimer-type syndromes with different etiologies, analogous to different types of psychosis. Currently there are no means to prevent the disease, slow its progress or reverse its neurodegenerative consequences. With few exceptions, clinical trials of a variety of compounds have resulted in patient responses that are disappointing with respect to both the proportion of responders and the magnitude of the responses. Novel approaches to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease are clearly warranted. For this reason, we organized the First Suncoast Workshop on the Neurobiology of Aging in St. Petersburg, Florida, which took place from February 26-March 1, 1989. This workshop focused on novel treatments and models for Alzheimer's disease and represented a cooperative venture among academia, government and industry, both in its participants and sponsorship. The Center for the Neurobiology of Aging at the University of Florida, the National Institute on Aging and Taiho Pharmaceutical Corporation in Japan sponsored the workshop in which scientists from the North America, Europe, Japan and other parts of Asia participated.
