Book excerpt: He’s out of prison. His targets are set. And she’s one of them. Elizabeth Strong had hoped after all this time, Steve Robinson would leave her alone. But his message is clear. He’s not only coming for her; he also has his sights set on another woman who refused to testify against him back then. But since recently being made an unwilling accomplice to Robinson’s current criminal empire, she immediately goes to Elizabeth for help. With at least one dirty cop in the Silverton Police Department, and Detective Martinez being relegated to desk duty, the stakes are higher for both women this time around. As the dangerous cat-and-mouse-game is just beginning, can Elizabeth and Martinez find a way to clean up the local police department and finally extract Steve Robinson from Elizabeth’s life for good? Or will she be plunged back into the path of the destruction that’s been following her for the past six years?

Download PDF Punishment and Citizenship by Milena Tripkovic and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal disenfranchisement-the practice of restricting electoral rights following criminal conviction-is the only surviving electoral restriction of adult, mentally competent citizens in contemporary democracies. Despite the strong devotion to the principle of universal suffrage, criminal offenders are still routinely deprived of active and passive franchise, while the justifications for such limitations remain elusive and incoherent. In Punishment and Citizenship, Milena Tripkovic develops an empirical and normative account of criminal disenfranchisement. Starting from historical precedents of such restrictions and examining the current policies of a number of European countries, Tripkovic argues that while criminal disenfranchisement is considered a form of punishment, it should instead be viewed as a citizenship sanction imposed when a citizen fails to perform their role as a member of a political community. In order to determine the justifications of disenfranchisement, Tripkovic explores various citizenship ideals and examines whether criminal offenders comply with the expectations that are posed before them. After developing a theoretical framework of citizenship duties, Tripkovic concludes that very few criminal offenders fail to satisfy fundamental citizenship conditions and exhaustive voting restrictions cannot ultimately be justified. A comprehensive assessment of criminal disenfranchisement, Punishment and Citizenship offers concrete policy suggestions to determine the limited circumstances under which electoral rights could justifiably be withheld from criminal offenders.

Download PDF California Criminal Law: Cases and Problems by Steven F. Shatz and published by LexisNexis. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes cases and problems as a vehicle for teaching students how to read and understand cases and statutes and to construct legal arguments. The cases are presented in relatively complete form, often with concurring and dissenting opinions in order to give students examples of fully developed legal arguments. The many short problems throughout the book are all taken from real cases and ask the students to develop the appropriate legal arguments based on the cases they have read. Each chapter begins with an introduction to give background to the cases and to outline the issues to be explored. Notes, which have been kept to a minimum, are generally used to extend the students' analysis by asking them to consider theoretical or policy issues raised by the cases or alternative approaches contained in the Model Penal Code or other jurisdictions. The Third Edition includes many new and influential California cases, as well as new problems, continuing the commitment to showing the students current developments in the criminal law.
Download PDF Resolving Foreign Bribery Cases with Non-Trial Resolutions Settlements and Non-Trial Agreements by Parties to the Anti-Bribery Convention by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-trial resolutions, often referred to as settlements, have been the predominant means of enforcing foreign bribery and other related offences since the entry into force of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention 20 years ago. The last decade has seen a steady increase in the use of coordinated multi-jurisdictional non-trial resolutions, which have, to date, permitted the highest global amount of combined financial penalties in foreign bribery cases. This study is the first cross-country examination of the different types of resolutions that can be used to resolve foreign bribery cases.
