Book excerpt: Mysticism and Logic and Other Essays is a collection of essays written and edited by Nobel Prize winning author Bertrand Russell. Russell was a heralded British philosopher, historian and mathematician, as well as a well-published author, and is considered one of the great minds of the 20th century. In this collection, Russell challenges romantic mysticism while promoting a logical and mathematics-based approach to interpreting the world around us. The collection opens with one of Russell's most well known essays, Mysticism and Logic, in which the author explains his worldview and the need for logic when interpreting life. Nine more essays follow this one, and touch on a range of topics including mathematics, life and death, plurality, the nature of existence, intelligence, and science's role in a liberal education. The first five essays of this collection are "entirely popular" according to Russell, whereas the final four are "somewhat more technical." Despite this disclaimer, the layman will still find these essays readable.

Book excerpt: Metaphysics, or the attempt to conceive the world as a whole by means of thought, has been developed, from the first, by the union and conflict of two very different human impulses, the one urging men towards mysticism, the other urging them towards science. Some men have achieved greatness through one of these impulses alone, others through the other alone: in Hume, for example, the scientific impulse reigns quite unchecked, while in Blake a strong hostility to science co-exists with profound mystic insight. But the greatest men who have been philosophers have felt the need both of science and of mysticism: the attempt to harmonise the two was what made their life, and what always must, for all its arduous uncertainty, make philosophy, to some minds, a greater thing than either science or religion. Before attempting an explicit characterisation of the scientific and the mystical impulses, I will illustrate them by examples from two philosophers whose greatness lies in the very intimate blending which they achieved. The two philosophers I mean are Heraclitus and Plato. Heraclitus, as every one knows, was a believer in universal flux: time builds and destroys all things. From the few fragments that remain, it is not easy to discover how he arrived at his opinions, but there are some sayings that strongly suggest scientific observation as the source....

Known widely as a political and social activist, Bertrand Russell was one of the most important philosophers of the 20th Century. Widely referenced, quoted and respected, Russell wrote on most areas of philosophy, but is arguably most revered for his advocacy of science and reason. Mysticism and Logic showcases this depth and breadth of thought by bringing together a selection of his writing on various subjects. Bite size commentaries from one of humanities greatest thinkers, on subjects as diverse as religion and maths and, of course, mysticism and logic.

Download PDF The Origins of Analytic Moral Philosophy and Other Essays by Fernando Salmerón and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salmeron reconstructs and analyzes key passages of twentieth century philosophical thought on ethics. He recovers the original wealth of the discussions of Moore, Wittgenstein and Russell, and illuminates Moore's work through a careful analysis of its relationships with ideas of his predecessors on the continent, especially Kant and Brentano. Salmeron further analyzes the development of ethical ideas in this century and their relationships with a theory of rationality through a dialogue with authors such as Max Black, Karl Popper and Jurgen Habermas. The author also discusses ethical ideas of Albert Einstein and Jean Paul Sartre. This book will be of interest for all those concerned with the history of philosophy in the twentieth century, particularly with the history of moral philosophy, not in an antiquarian way, but with a focus on the way in which traditions shape current philosophical ideas.

Book excerpt: The Problems of Philosophy The Analysis of Mind Mysticism and Logic and Other Essays Political Ideals Free Thought and Official Propaganda "Is there any knowledge in the world which is so certain that no reasonable man could doubt it? This question, which at first sight might not seem difficult, is really one of the most difficult that can be asked. When we have realized the obstacles in the way of a straightforward and confident answer, we shall be well launched on the study of philosophy-for philosophy is merely the attempt to answer such ultimate questions, not carelessly and dogmatically, as we do in ordinary life and even in the sciences, but critically, after exploring all that makes such questions puzzling, and after realizing all the vagueness and confusion that underlie our ordinary ideas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven essays gathered in this volume are all concerned, more or less directly, with the “unspeakable sentences” of fictional narration, that is, the sentences that do not bear any explicit mark nor any implicit indication of a first person and which are not interpretable as the expression of a speaker’s subjectivity. Chief among them are the sentences of free indirect style, which this book prefers to call sentences of “represented speech and thought.” All of these essays were written after the publication of Unspeakable Sentences: Narration and Representation in the Language of Fiction (1982). They take up its theoretical frameworks and extend its analyses into other contexts, where they acquire other uses, other functions, and other values. Taken as a whole, this work bears witness to the richness and vitality of the encounter between linguistics, philosophy, and the theory and analysis of narrative and the novel.

Book excerpt: From 1895, the year he published his first signed article, to four days before his death in 1970 when he wrote his last, Bertrand Russell was a powerful force in the world of mathematics, philosophy, human rights and the struggle for peace. During those years he published 70 books, almost as many pamphlets and over 2,000 articles, he also contributed pieces to some 200 books. The availability of the Bertrand Russell Archives at McMaster University since 1968 has made it possible for the first time to compile a full, descriptive bibliography of his writings. The Collected Papers are based on it. Fully annotated, the Bibliography is textually oriented and will guide the scholar, collector and general reader to the authoritative editions of Russell's works. It includes references to the locations of all known speeches and interviews, and reproductions of the dust-jackets of Russell's books. Blackwell, Ruja and Turcon have cooperated for nearly 20 years on the new Bibliography. Lord Russell saw the extensive additions for it near the end of his life and declared: `I am impressed.'
