Book excerpt: "A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse — and Thou, Beside me, singing in the Wilderness," is only one of the memorable verses from Edward FitzGerald's translations of poems by the 11th century Persian sage Omar Khayyám. This magnificent version of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám reproduces the edition published by Hodder & Stoughton of London in 1909, in which the timeless poems are accompanied by full-color images by Golden Age illustrator Edmund Dulac. Critics and collectors have long debated which book represents the peak of Dulac's career, and many agree that his affinity for Persian art makes this gloriously illustrated volume a strong contender.

Book excerpt: Rubaiyat, originally composed by Omar Khayyam, suggests withdrawal from the sorry scheme of things. Over the centuries it has gained immense fame for its romantic melancholy. First published in March 1859 as an unpretentious and anonymous pamphlet, its true literary worth was later discovered by Rossetti and Swinburne.

Book excerpt: In the eleventh century, in Persia, there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami--or, Omar, son of Abraham, the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry, and while his rhymes received little attention in their day, they were rediscovered and translated into beautiful English--more than seven centuries later--by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds, a great collaboration of the past and the present, and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the best loved poem cycles in the English language. With their concern for the here and now, as opposed to the hereafter, Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago; they are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow, of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface, is truly a classic, and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love.

Book excerpt: 'The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a line Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.' In the 'rubáiyát' (short epigrammatic poems) of the medieval Persian poet, mathematician, and philosopher Omar Khayyám, Edward FitzGerald saw an unflinching challenge to the illusions and consolations of mankind in every age. His version of Omar is neither a translation nor an independent poem; sceptical of divine providence and insistent on the pleasure of the passing moment, its 'Orientalism' offers FitzGerald a powerful and distinctive voice, in whose accents a whole Victorian generation comes to life. Although the poem's vision is bleak, it is conveyed in some of the most beautiful and haunting images in English poetry - and some of the sharpest- edged. The poem sold no copies at all on its first appearance in 1859, yet when it was 'discovered' two years later its first admirers included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Swinburne, and Ruskin. Daniel Karlin's richly annotated edition does justice to the scope and complexity of FitzGerald's lyrical meditation on 'human death and fate'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: In July 1856, Professor Edward Cowell sent his friend Edward Fitzgerald a Persian-language copy of poems by Omar Khayyam, the 12th century Persian poet, astronomer, and mathematician. Fitzgerald strove for three years to turn the 'essence' of these poems into English, and in 1859 published his classic free translation of the Persian Master's verse. The book was not an instant success; but the beautiful quatrains that Fitzgerald so painstakingly put together have stood the test of time, and made his work the most popular rendering of Khayyam's Rubaiyat.

Book excerpt: Edward FitzGerald's ‘Rubáiyát’, loosely based on verses attributed to the eleventh-century Persian writer, Omar Khayyám, has become one of the most widely known poems in the world, republished virtually every year from 1879 to the present day, and translated into over eighty different languages. And yet it has been largely ignored or at best patronized by the academic establishment. This volume sets out to explore the reasons for both the popularity and the neglect.

Book excerpt: A repository of subversive, melancholic and existentialist themes and ideas, the rubaiyat (quatrains) that make up the collected poems attributed to the 12th century Persian astronomer Omar Khayyam have enchanted readers for centuries. In this modern translation, complete with critical introduction and epilogue, Juan Cole elegantly renders the verse for contemporary readers. Exploring such universal questions as the meaning of life, fate and how to live a good life in the face of human mortality, this translation reveals anew why this singular collection of poems has struck a chord with such a temporally and culturally diverse audience, from the wine houses of medieval Iran to the poets of Western twentieth century modernism.

Book excerpt: It would be difficult to overstate the popularity of Omar Khayyám's Rubáiyát. Since it was fist published in 1859, it has been translated into 70 languages; appeared in at least 1300 different editions, illustrated by 150 plus artists and set to music by 100 composers. A reviewer in the Bookman considered Constable's 1920 Art Deco edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám to be one of the most beautiful of the many editions of 'Omar' to have ever been published. The early 20th century was a Golden Age for lavish editions of the poem illustrated by the most accomplished artists of the day. Balfour's stunning Art Deco style, gloriously decadent and risqué as it is, carries a strong echo of Beardsley. His remarkable suite of 38 illustrations epitomizes an the era of opulence, extravagance and a new found freedom of expression following the radical social changes caused by the First World War. Books such as these, and particularly the Balfour edition of the Rubáiyát, are extremely rare these days. Balfour's illustrations have scarcely been seen at all since the book was first published. This eBook aims to redress the balance somewhat since it contains the full suite of Balfour's original illustrations facing quatrains from FitzGerald's first version of his translation, exactly as they appeared in the 1920 print edition. There is also a supporting text of biographical notes concerning Omar Khayyám, FitzGerald and Ronald Balfour plus the texts for all five versions of FitzGerald's translations.

Book excerpt: Its lines and verses have become part of the western literary canon and his translation of this most famous of poems has been continuously in print in for almost a century and a half. But just who was Edward FitzGerald? Was he the eccentric recluse that most scholars would have us believe? Is there more to the man than just his famous translation? In The Man Behind the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam William Martin and Sandra Martin go beyond the standard view. Drawing on their unique analysis of the more than 2,000 surviving letters of FitzGerald, together with evidence from his scrapbooks, commonplace books and materials from his personal library, they reveal a more convivial yet complex personality than we have been led to suppose."

Book excerpt: 'A Book of Verses underneath the Bough,A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread - and Thou ...'When Edward Fitzgerald first published his translation of the poetry of Omar Khayyám in 1859 it had little impact on the literary world. But a chance find in a bookshop by a friend of the Pre-Raphaelites led to it being taken up by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, and from then on its popularity grew. Since then, it has become one of the most popular poems. In turn, it has influenced writers such as Matthew Arnold and Thomas Hardy, not to mention many musicians and film-makers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.Omar Khayyám (1048-1131) was a Persian poet and philosopher who lived at the court of Malik Shah. He was also an astronomer and a mathematician. A manuscript of some of his rubáiyát (four-line verses) survives in the Bodleian Library and a copy of this manuscript is thought to have inspired Fitzgerald to begin the translation.Fitzgerald's mystical and sensual version of Omar Khayyám's quatrains is freely translated and restructured to follow the course of a day. The epigrammatic stanzas, infused with a melancholy yet consoling philosophy that urges readers to seize the day and 'make the most of what we yet may spend', have proved to be enduringly intriguing and popular. Through brilliant imagery they celebrate the sensuous pleasures of life - wine, food, love - while also mourning the painful truth of its brevity. This decorative edition features gorgeous colour illustrations with an oriental theme by René Bull, first published in 1913, which provide a perfect counterpoint to the lines of this extraordinarily influential poem.
